Orchestra from the Outset!

The Näppäri musical education is founded on the belief that everybody who is willing can become part of an orchestra, irrespective of age or experience - from young children to adults of all ages, from beginners to professionals. Everyone learns together and has a lot of fun, including the audience. The results sound very good too. It goes without saying that the vitality and joy of playing is infectious. All of this is made possible by the use of the Näppäri method, which is employed across numerous musical styles. Open festival spaces, such as the renowned annual Kaustinen Folk Music Festival that has been running for over 50 years, host over 300 Näppäri musicians from all over the world.

Näppärit is an instrumental pedagogy that was developed in the 1980s by Mauno Järvelä in Finland and has its foundation in “Pelimanni”, the Finnish folk fiddling tradition. Through the interplay of children, young people and professionals, this pedagogical approach provides the stimulus for the orchestras’ work and their contact with music schools. The Näppäri method promotes interest in string instruments, as well as encouraging new ways of teaching string instruments to classes and youth orchestras. It facilitates contact between different generations, as well as different strata of the population.

As an agency, Allegra advises orchestras, festivals and musical schools on how to implement the Näppäri method. We provide teaching materials, advice on the organisation of tutorials and how to conduct workshops with Näppäri teachers and artists from Finland. The Allegra Concert Agency is proud to be the official representative of Näppärit in the German-speaking countries.
